Roosevelt School

This project proposes that a lack of activities during their recess time has a negative impact on student behavior. Interviews and surveys with students, teachers, office staff, lunch aides, and the school nurse showed that many members of the school community believed that boredom during recess leads to disruptive behavior. The group presented to the board of education and received $5,000 to use toward recess equipment.

This project addressed the cleanliness and water quality in the school's drinking fountains. Student interviews and surveys helped them to identify three issues; poor water quality/taste, dirty fountains, and that filters are not changed as often as needed. They concluded that their school fountains should be upgraded. They designed a three-step action plan to raise awareness, contact stakeholders, and communicate their recommendations.

This project tackles the issue of long lunch lines in their school cafeteria to create a more enjoyable, safe, and relaxed lunchtime experience. In a panel discussion with administrators they learned that there are two major challenges to improving the lunch lines. One is the overall design of the cafeteria and the second is that their contracted food service provider, makes most of the decisions on how many staff to hire. After reading research focused on the issue of lunch lines, they came up with some recommendations to improve the speed at which students recieve their lunch. This group plans to meet with administrators in their district as well as the food service company to share their recommendations.

The middle school students at Smith school were concerned that the inadequate amount of time for lunch and recess causes students to feel stress, hunger and decreased focus in classes. In an interview with the administrator, they learned that teacher contracts would make it difficult to extend the school day to provide more break time. By conducting surveys and interviews with teachers, they identified several alternative options for providing students with time to recharge throughout the day. They also created a modified scheduled that reduced class periods by 2 minutes to allow for an extended lunch and recess period.

This project highlights the need for financial literacy classes in their middle school. The students researched the state's current legislation on the inclusion of financial literacy instruction in grades 6-8 and reviewed curriculum pacing guides from schools that offer financial literacy courses in each grade. Interviews with students led them to the conclusion that integrating financial literacy into their current coursework is not as effective as offering separate courses and that many students had a strong interest in learning about how to be financially responsible.
